about me pic smaller

Wendy Cumes Rowell

I  began my career in television and have 20 years experience in multimedia as an art director. Having returned to study in 2012, and achieving a post grad degree in Fine Art , I am currently continuing study towards the completion of my Masters in Fine Art.

My position as a primary Arts consultant is twofold. It consists of Art classes, with ‘Artist Wendy’, which have been running across Brisbane Northside schools since 2007. Growing attendance and interest is testament to the response from students and parents with over 120 children participating weekly.

I also create public art in the form of murals which are designed to be educational learning areas and sites for student engagement.

Since 2016 I have facilitated motivational Art Workshops for professionals and coordinated art therapy workshops for women at the Nundah Community Centre during DV month.

Why is Art important?

I believe it is intrinsically linked to the fibre of our being. Without art we have no history, culture, philosophy, we have no sense of identity. Without art we have no sense of play, discovery, or imagination. We have no magic.

Children are pure, sensitive, beings waiting for you to lead by example. Explorers waiting for you to lead them into undiscovered worlds which will stimulate their senses.

Their eyes widen at the way colours blend randomly with the smudge of pastels between their fingers. They shreak with excitement when salt and water soak up the swirling watercolour kaleidoscope before them. But, for me, the most exciting part of my practice is when they begin to converse with each other during the process.
